Hometown Variety to close its doors

One of Hastings' long-enduring businesses is closing its doors.

Hometown Variety/Sherry's Cards and Gifts at 620 W. Second Street will become the latest iconic institution in the city to go under. It will join OK Cafe on the list of longtime Hastings businesses to close this year.

Jason Schreiner, who purchased the store from Jim Guthmann in October 2007, said it was his aim from the outset to keep the store looking essentially the same as when Guthmann owned it for the sake of its longtime customers.

Guthmann initially opened the store as Ben Franklin/Sherry's Hallmark at 742 W. Second Street in September 1979.
