Ten years ago, a tragic accident injured 12 people and took a toll on the city of Hastings.
"It was a terrible day in our city's history, probably the worst day in the 11, 12 years I've been administrator," Hastings City Administrator Joe Patterson said. "We learned a lot from it and hopefully, we won't see something like that happen in our community again."
It was an autocross event called the Motorsport Mile during the third weekend of August 2002. Drivers competed individually in timed races through downtown Hastings. In the final hours of the event on Aug. 18, 2002, a silver Pontiac Trans Am driven by Michael J. Baures of Casper, Wyo., went out of control at Third Street and Denver Avenue.
