Sex assault reports increase
With a quarter of the year still to go, Hastings could have more sexual assaults reported in 2012 than in any of the past five years if reports continue at the same rate.
Through Aug. 24, 43 sexual assault reports have been filed with the Hastings Police Department. During the past five years, the average total for the year has been 49.
While the statistic may seem alarming, Sgt. Steven Murphy said it could be that more attacks are occurring or just that victims have more confidence in the police and are more willing to report.
