Move to college offers fresh start

Making the transition to a new school can be tough on first-year college students.

To Corrine Huthoefer, Altman Hall at Hastings College represents a safe haven in a life unsettled by disaster.

The Virginia-born 18-year-old, who is the oldest of four children, still is reeling from a house fire that destroyed the family's home in the Mountain Shadows neighborhood of Colorado Springs, Colo., on June 26. Home alone at the time, she scarcely had time to gather up the family's four cats, two dogs, and hamster before the seemingly controlled fire consumed all of her most cherished possessions.
