Doane head coach Matt Franzen speaks at GPA
C media day on Aug. 2 in Lincoln.
The 2011 football season was a big turnaround for Doane College. After going 3-7 in 2010, the Tigers started the season on a five-game win streak and finished with an 8-2 record overall (7-2 in the GPAC).
2012 looked promising with the Tigers returning 13 total starters. But the spring had one more challenge for Doane to overcome.
"Last year, we had a heck of a year. We had a lot of high highs, playing the game that we play on the field and it led to a lot of growth as a team," said Doane head coach Matt Franzen. "Then, real life came up and bit us. Back in April, we lost one of our players to a car accident... Real life really came up and knocked us back. You're dealing a lot with young men and playing a game, which is what we do. We work year round at it as coaches. But at the end of the day, it is just a game that we play."
