Utilities late Friday afternoon.
Heartwell Park was mostly empty Friday afternoon as even the ducks took refuge from the 100-degree heat, resting in the shade underneath park benches.
Jennifer Anderson and her son, Cole, 5, were among the few people using the park’s wading pool to cool down.
“We come here to beat the heat,” she said. “We go to the Aquacourt and drink lots of water. It’s been bad lately.”
High temperatures in the 90s and low 100s have baked area residents the last 11 days.
Only once since June 26 was the daily high temperature in Hastings below 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service in Hastings. Most days have had highs in the 90s. On three days, the thermometer broke the 100-degree mark.
Relief is on the way with high temperatures predicted to be in the mid-80s today through Tuesday.
