4H'er running up a steep learning curve

Jeff Hamburger, 19, of Inland will show Daisy at the Clay
County Fair this week and has qualified for the Nebraska State Fair.

INLAND — Gerald Hilligas likes to joke that he helped Jeff Hamburger select horses for a 4-H project this year.

“When he told me he was going into rodeo, I was kind of downcast ’cause I figured he was gonna get all smashed up,” Hilligas said. “You know how the bulls are. I talked him out of that.”

He reminded Hamburger that even after eight seconds the bull doesn’t leave the rider alone.

“I told him ‘get on the horses and ride them,’ ” he said. “You can ride them up and have no problems.”

Hilligas was caring Monday evening for his brother Jim’s horses at a barn in Inland, including Truly Rosetta Mist “Daisy,” an 18-year-old Appaloosa that Hamburger has been working with since deciding three months ago to do a horse project.

Hamburger contacted the Hilligas family earlier this year to see if he could train with one of their horses for 4-H.

Most Clay County Fair activities begin Thursday. The fair continues through Sunday.
