Memorial for toddler grows

Stuffed animals and other toddler toys line the curb in front of the house where 2-year-old Tryson Ruff was struck and killed by a car Saturday evening.

The boy’s mother, Amy Ruff, said she didn’t know the woman who came by Saturday evening and asked to start a memorial. At first, it amounted to a few items around the mailbox. This morning it stretched along the entire length of the house at 2317 W. Seventh St., a way for the family, friends and the community to remember the little boy who ran across the street to his mother as a car approached.

The car, an eastbound 2001 Buick LeSabre driven by Dusty Consbruck, 18, of Hastings, struck the boy at 7:21 p.m. outside the Ruff household, according to the Nebraska State Patrol, which investigated the accident.

The family had been preparing to go to the park when Tryson ran into Seventh Street, trying to cross to get to his mother.

Hastings Fire and Rescue took Tryson to Mary Lanning with extensive injuries. Staff had been working to stabilize him when he died.

Tryson’s aunt, Kristi Boutin, said the memorial started as a surprise. She created a post about the memorial on Facebook and invited people to come out to support Tryson’s mother in her time of need.

Amy wants to thank the family, friends and strangers who have contributed to the memorial and have supported her on the day of the accident.
