Replacement process has begun

The search for a new police chief has begun.

Current chief Larry Thoren is retiring in August after 14 years with the Hastings Police Department.

City Administrator Joe Patterson said the process started this week with advertisements.
Advertisements for the position were posted this week and will continue for three weeks. The position is open to applicants from across the nation. Two current captains, Gene Boner and Adam Story, will also be considered in the selection process.

“All things being equal, we’ll always promote from within,” Patterson said. “But if not, we’ll put the best person we can in the job.”

During the search, the mayor will ask Sgt. Bill Mann to serve as interim chief for the city.
While it means a sergeant will be giving direction to captains for a short time, Patterson said it doesn’t give any potential candidate the perception of favoritism.
