Hastings police chief Larry Thoren is pictured at the
Hastings Police Department Thursday. Thoren is
retiring in August.
In his 14 years as chief of the Hastings Police Department, Larry Thoren helped the department regain the trust of the community and brought Midwest values back to the agency.
Before Thoren arrived in Hastings in 1998, the previous chief, Jim Montgomery, was from the East Coast.
Capt. Gene Boner said the previous chief didn’t seem to share the same values and ethics as officers and community members in the area. Those values clashed and created turmoil between the administration and officers as well as tension with citizens.
“For those of us who were there at that time, it was tough to come to work,” he said. “With Chief Thoren, we didn’t have those issues. It was very refreshing for all of us.”
