VALLEY — After needing 12 innings and more than three hours to win its first game at the state tournament, Sutton didn’t take nearly as long Sunday.

In a game that lasted only 90 minutes, Sutton won a pitchers’ duel 2-0 over host Waterloo-Valley on the second day of the Class C seniors state tournament Sunday to move one win from clinching a spot in the state title game.

It came after Sutton won 4-3 in 12 innings Saturday against Valparaiso, thanks to a suicide squeeze in the top of the 12th inning that ended eight consecutive scoreless innings between the two teams.

With Sunday’s win, Sutton (41-4), last year’s Class C juniors state champion, moves into a winners’ bracket game today at 7 p.m. against Pender with the winner guaranteed a spot in Wednesday’s championship.
