Gabby Krueger, 5, gives the family Beagle, Buddy, a hug on
Tuesday. Buddy was lost for more than 30 hours before being
discovered in a sink hole near the family's home on Saturday.
A beagle who was trapped in an overgrown sink hole for more than 30 hours was watched over by a canine guardian angel during his ordeal.
Buddy, an 8-year-old beagle owned by Seth and Kim Krueger of rural Hastings, was out for a run with a cattle dog on Friday morning, a scenario all too familiar for the acreage animal.
“He’s hard to keep in,” Seth said. “We found him on Mother’s Day about seven years ago and his owner said they couldn’t keep him in.”
But when Buddy didn’t return home by evening Friday, the family grew concerned. Seth feared the worst.
“I actually thought he had got run over,” he said. “So I drove the roads but never found him.”
A fierce thunderstorm kicked up overnight, making the chances of his survival seem even grimmer. Then a neighbor told Krueger that the cattle dog that was seen with Buddy when he disappeared had been acting peculiar that day. He had been lying in the middle of the street, as if injured, and wouldn’t budge for long periods of time. He continued this behavior until he was picked up by his owner Friday night.
