night at Duncan Field.
The Hastings Five Points Bank senior legion baseball team finished the weekend with 53 hits in five games.
But when its starting pitcher threw a complete game two-hitter, the hot bats turned cold when they were needed the most. And the defense didn’t help any.
It’s arguably one of the toughest breaks in sports. Xander Schmidt must be feeling it after his team dropped a 4-0 decision to Grand Island Home Federal Tuesday night at Duncan Field in which the Hastings offense managed just two hits while the defense committed six errors.
“(Schmidt) has thrown two great games in a row, and tonight, he was pitching really well. He pitches a two-hitter, and you’re going to win that 95 percent of the time,” FPB head coach Steve Illingworth said. “Unfortunately tonight, we went up against Grand Island’s ace, Will Bamesberger, who pitched lights out also.”
