Young children in Hastings accustomed to watching Nickelodeon cartoons on Saturday morning were encouraged via a national blackout of the station to get outside and play at the Kiwanis Fun Day Saturday at Lake Hastings.
Held in conjunction with Nickelodeon’s ninth annual event, the local version included opportunities for parents and children to interact in any number of different outdoor activities, including Frisbee toss, dodgeball, soccer, potato sack races and other games.
Kathy Schultz, Hastings Public Library children’s librarian and Kiwanis member, said the event was aimed at getting children away from the television and other electronic distractions and engaged in good, old-fashioned outdoor play. The concept of exercise has become far too foreign to many of us today, she said.
“There is too much sitting around inside,” Schultz said. “We’re all turning into couch potatoes. The whole idea of this day was to get the kids to turn off the TV, turn off the computer and just have a wonderful time outside. Fresh air and exercise.”
