Wind causes fire to spread near Sutton

SUTTON — Whipping winds spread a fire that started shortly before 3 p.m. Wednesday 2 1/2 miles east of here five miles southeast into Fillmore County where it destroyed buildings and hay bales.

The Sutton Fire Department served as incident command.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, south central Nebraska saw wind speeds of up to 55 mph Wednesday.

Among the other fire departments that also responded to the fire were Grafton, Fairmont, Geneva, Ohiowa, Davenport, Shickley, Bruning, Milligan, Clay Center, Fairfield, Edgar and Glenvil.

"It's hard enough to fight fires in normal weather conditions, but then when you add the wind and dry conditions it just made it unbearable," said John Schurman, Sutton assistant fire chief. "They did an excellent job."
