Minden's Chris Shelton approaches the finish line to finish
first in the Minden invitational Sept. 22.
Hundreds of high school cross country runners will be jostling for a chance to finish at the top of their class Friday at the Kearney Country Club.
Tribland will be well represented, with seven full teams and a total of 55 runners. Two of those teams are the Minden boys and girls squads, which qualified together for the first time since 2005.
"There's quite the buzz in Minden," said Minden boys and girls cross country coach Shawn Wheelock. "We're having another successful sports season in Minden. It's pretty cool. ... They're very excited around here. It's a very supportive community, and we're just very excited."
And there's no reason for Minden to not be anxious for Friday's meet. Both teams, especially in the last part of the season, have been competing with the best teams in Class C. Wheelock believes his Whippets can compete with the top teams and individuals at state. After all, Minden has been doing it all year.
