Reading becoming habit for Middle School students

Seventh-grader Lisa Duncan works on her I Wonder statement
while classmates Moises Huezo and Jaqi Hoffman read during
Silent Sustained Reading at Hastings Middle School Thursday
afternoon. Each day the students are given time to read a book
of their choice or ciriculum related non-fiction.
Reading novels can become a habit you just can’t break.

And students at Hastings Middle School are well on their way to forming that habit now that they are required to have a “fun” reading book with them at all times.
The requirement is part of the new silent sustained reading or SSR program.

“There is so much research that talks about reading, and if you don’t have basic reading skills, it affects every other aspect of your life,” said principal Dave Essink.
