STC's Reining runs best race of career

South Central Unified runner Emet Fanning (59) and Hastings
St. Cecilia's Niles Uerling (72) run in step near the
2,500-meter mark Thursday in the Randall Smith Invitational
at the Hebron Country Club. Uerling passed Fanning to place
sixth; Fanning ended up eighth.

HEBRON — With seven of the 10 teams at the Randall Smith cross country invite being from Class D, District 1, St. Cecilia had an opportunity to make a statement.
And it did.

The Bluehawks placed three runners in the top six and four in the top 10 to win the invitational with 25 points at the Hebron Country Club on Thursday. Thayer Central finished third with 46 points, South Central (124) was seventh and Fillmore Central (148) was 10th.

Senior John Reining was St. Cecilia’s top finisher after running the course in 17:47.8, which was good for fourth place.
“This is the best race I’ve had in all of my high school career,” Reining said. “It was nice, not too windy and not too hot of a day — just a perfect day to get out and race.”
